MBBS in Russia can be an option for Indian students comparing overseas medical education with private medical colleges at home. Before choosing a university, understand the complete cost, teaching language, clinical training and route to medical registration in India. A lower first-year fee alone is not enough to make a sound decision.

This guide answers the questions students and parents ask most often about the 2027–28 intake. Fees below are indicative planning estimates, not confirmed university quotations. Admission rules and licensing requirements can change; check official notices and discuss your shortlisted programme with a Study Abroad Campus counsellor before paying.

Fees and Total Cost

How much does MBBS in Russia cost?

There is no single fee for every university. As a starting point, annual tuition of roughly ₹2.5–6 lakh would mean ₹15–36 lakh over six years if the fee and exchange rate stayed unchanged. This is an arithmetic planning illustration—not a university package or an all-inclusive budget. Higher-fee programmes, annual increases and currency movements can take tuition above this range.

Your full budget must also cover accommodation, food, travel, insurance, documents and personal expenses. Ask for an official year-by-year fee schedule in the billing currency and a clear list of included and excluded services.

Expense What to include in your budget
Tuition Every academic year, possible increases and payment deadlines
Hostel Annual accommodation charge, deposits, room occupancy and utilities
Food and daily spending Groceries or mess, local transport, phone and personal essentials
Insurance and health checks Required medical insurance, tests and renewals
Visa and documentation Invitation, visa, translations, legalisation and renewals as applicable
Travel International flights, transfers and trips home
Additional study costs Books, clinical clothing, examination charges and later licensing preparation
Contingency Exchange-rate changes, emergencies and unexpected academic or travel costs

Is Russia cheaper than private MBBS in India?

It can be, but compare the complete course cost and licensing pathway, not tuition alone. An Indian government seat may be substantially less expensive. Overseas study also involves international travel, adapting to a new language and meeting foreign-graduate requirements before practising in India. Compare your options with the MBBS in India overview.

English Medium and Language

Is MBBS in Russia taught entirely in English?

Some universities offer English-medium General Medicine programmes, while others offer Russian or bilingual teaching. Obtain written confirmation of the teaching and examination language for the specific course and campus, not just a university brochure mentioning an English option.

Ask how lectures, practical classes, clinical instruction and assessments are delivered throughout the programme. English-medium instruction is also an important requirement under India's foreign medical graduate regulations.

Do I need to learn Russian?

Yes, practical Russian is important for living independently and communicating with patients during clinical training. An English-medium course does not mean hospital patients will speak English. Ask how the university teaches medical Russian and supports international students in clinical settings.

Is IELTS or TOEFL required?

Not every university requires IELTS or TOEFL. Some assess English through school qualifications, an interview or their own admission process. Follow the university's published requirements; do not assume that one university's policy applies everywhere.

Eligibility and NEET

Indian applicants should check both the university's entry criteria and India's requirements for students taking a primary medical qualification abroad.

  • Complete the required Class 12 science subjects and English from an accepted board.
  • Meet the applicable minimum marks and age requirements. Common eligibility benchmarks include age 17 by 31 December of the admission year and PCB marks of 50% for general candidates or 40% for SC/ST/OBC candidates, subject to official rules and applicable disability provisions.
  • Qualify NEET-UG as required for Indian citizens and OCI candidates pursuing medical education abroad under the applicable Indian rules.
  • Check the validity of the NEET result for the intended admission date.
  • Meet the university's admission tests, interview, medical fitness and document requirements where applicable.

NEET qualification does not by itself confirm that an overseas programme meets India's licensing requirements. Academic eligibility, admission and professional registration are separate checks. For 2027–28, use the official admission and regulatory notices applicable to your circumstances.

Hostel and Living Cost

What should students check before accepting a hostel?

Confirm room availability before paying an accommodation charge. Ask about heating, security, shared kitchens, bathrooms, internet, occupancy and the distance to classes and hospitals. Obtain written details of deposits, refund conditions and what happens during vacations.

Indian food may be available through a mess, shared kitchen or nearby restaurants, but it is not guaranteed at every campus. Check meal charges and arrangements directly rather than assuming food is included in tuition.

How much should I budget each month?

For an initial estimate, allow approximately ₹12,000–20,000 or more per month for food, local transport and personal spending. Treat hostel rent, insurance and flights as separate unless your written budget explicitly includes them. The city, currency rate, dietary preferences and lifestyle can change actual spending significantly.

Plan for winter clothing and an emergency fund as well as routine expenses. Review travel advice from the Embassy of India in Moscow before travel and keep emergency contact details accessible.

NMC / FMGL and Practising in India

Are Russian medical universities “NMC approved”?

Do not rely on an agent's “NMC approved” label. The key question is whether your specific qualification, training and registration pathway satisfy the National Medical Commission's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations and subsequent applicable notices.

A World Directory of Medical Schools listing is useful to check the institution's details, but listing alone is not proof of NMC compliance or a licence to practise in India.

What should I check under the foreign medical graduate rules?

For students covered by the FMGL Regulations, 2021, important requirements include:

  • A medical course of at least 54 months and the prescribed subjects.
  • A separate internship of at least 12 months in the same foreign medical institution.
  • English as the medium of instruction.
  • Completion of the foreign course, training and internship in the same institution in the degree-awarding country, as required by the regulations.
  • Registration with the competent professional authority in the degree-awarding country, with practice rights at par with that country's citizens.
  • Completion within the prescribed overall time limit.
  • The mandated licensing examination and at least 12 months of supervised internship in India, followed by the required registration process.

A programme advertised as “six years” does not automatically demonstrate that every condition is met. Request the curriculum, internship arrangements and local licensing requirements in writing. Read the NMC's official FMGL questions and answers and check subsequent notices on the NMC website.

Will I need FMGE or NExT after graduation?

You must follow the examination and registration system legally applicable when you seek Indian registration. Check NBEMS for FMGE notices and NMC for changes, including any implementation of NExT. No university or consultant can guarantee exemption from future licensing requirements.

Admission Process and Documents

Start with eligibility and programme checks before comparing packages. A sensible admission sequence is:

  1. Shortlist universities by course structure, language, clinical training, city and full budget.
  2. Obtain official eligibility criteria, fee schedules, refund terms and programme documents.
  3. Submit the university application and complete any required assessment or interview.
  4. Check the admission offer and invitation documents carefully.
  5. Complete visa formalities and pay only through documented, authorised channels.
  6. Arrange accommodation, insurance and travel after checking the required approvals.
  7. Keep copies of academic, payment, visa and registration records throughout your studies.

Typical documents include Class 10 and 12 certificates and marksheets, NEET scorecard, passport, photographs, admission and invitation letters, and medical reports required by the university or visa authority. Translation, legalisation, financial evidence and insurance requirements depend on the application. Use the official checklist for your chosen university and visa category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I complete the Russian internship in India instead?

Do not plan to replace the required foreign internship with an Indian internship. Under the FMGL framework, the internship at the same foreign institution and the subsequent supervised internship in India are distinct requirements. Check the rules applicable to your admission cohort before enrolling.

Does NEET qualification guarantee admission in Russia?

No. You must also satisfy the university's entry requirements, complete its admission process and obtain the necessary visa. NEET qualification is not a guarantee of admission or later medical registration.

Can I transfer to another university during the course?

Do not assume a transfer will preserve eligibility to practise in India. FMGL conditions concerning the same institution and country make transfers a serious regulatory issue. Obtain guidance from the relevant authorities before making any change.

When should I apply for the 2027–28 intake?

Begin shortlisting and preparing documents well before the university deadline. Many main intakes begin around September, but application, invitation and visa timelines vary. An advertised intake date is not a promise of an available seat.

Is a medical career in India guaranteed after studying in Russia?

No. You must complete the required education, meet the applicable foreign and Indian licensing conditions, pass the mandated examination and obtain registration. Choose a programme for its documented training and compliance, not promises of a guaranteed licence or job.
