Admission to MBBS in India requires NEET-UG qualification and a seat allotted through the relevant authorised counselling process. Your rank matters, but so do domicile, category, college preferences and the amount your family can comfortably afford for the complete course.

These answers explain the main decisions for students planning MBBS admission in 2027–28. Session-specific dates, fees, seat availability and round rules must come from the official NTA, MCC, NMC and state notices. No admission date, seat total or closing rank is assumed here before the relevant authority confirms it.

Eligibility and NEET

Is NEET compulsory for MBBS in India?

Yes. NEET-UG is required for MBBS admission in India, including private, deemed and NRI seats. A claim of a legitimate MBBS seat without NEET qualification should be treated as a warning sign. Qualifying NEET allows you to pursue eligible counselling options; it does not guarantee a seat.

What are the basic eligibility requirements?

Students generally need the prescribed Class 12 science subjects and English, the required marks and the minimum age of 17 by 31 December of the admission year. Common PCB benchmarks are 50% for general candidates and 40% for SC/ST/OBC candidates, with disability provisions as notified. The applicable NEET bulletin determines accepted qualifications, category rules and other conditions.

Check the official NTA NEET portal for the bulletin relevant to 2027–28. Applicants with additional subjects, overseas qualifications or unusual schooling histories should confirm their position against the official rules before applying.

Is the qualifying score the same as the admission cut-off?

No. The qualifying threshold determines whether you have qualified NEET. A college closing rank is the rank of the last allotted candidate for a particular college, quota, category and round. These are different measures. You can qualify NEET and still fall outside the closing rank for a preferred college.

MCC and State Counselling

What is the difference between All India Quota and state quota?

In participating government colleges, the usual division is 15% All India Quota (AIQ) through MCC and 85% state quota through the state authority. This is not a universal split for every institution. Central institutions, deemed universities and other special categories follow their notified schemes.

Seat or institution type Where to check counselling details
15% AIQ seats in participating government colleges MCC
AIIMS, JIPMER and notified central institutions MCC, with institution-specific eligibility where applicable
Deemed university seats MCC's notified scheme
State quota government seats Respective state counselling authority
Private college seats administered by a state State counselling authority and its seat-category rules
NRI seats The authority managing that institution and quota; eligibility evidence is required

Can I register for both MCC and state counselling?

Usually yes, if you meet each scheme's eligibility requirements. Registration, fees, deposits and choice filling are separate. Qualifying for a state process does not automatically register you with MCC, or vice versa. Track both schedules and check how joining a seat affects participation in later rounds.

How does MBBS counselling work?

  1. Obtain your NEET result and review your rank, category and eligibility.
  2. Register with MCC and the relevant state authorities for eligible options.
  3. Pay the required registration fee and security deposit through official portals.
  4. Compare colleges, seat categories, complete fees and bond obligations.
  5. Fill choices in your genuine order of preference and complete locking as instructed.
  6. Check the allotment result and download the required letter.
  7. Complete reporting, document verification and payment within the deadline.
  8. Follow the specific rules for willingness to upgrade, resignation and later rounds.

Use MCC's official UG counselling page for its scheme, schedules and notices. Our NEET UG counselling guide explains the wider planning process.

Do all portals use “freeze” and “float”?

No. Counselling authorities may use different terms and procedures for accepting an allotment or seeking an upgrade. Do not assume that a familiar label has the same meaning on every portal. Read the reporting and upgradation instructions for your authority and round before taking action.

Fees and Total Course Budget

What are MBBS fees in government and private colleges?

There is no single nationwide MBBS fee. College ownership, state policy and the exact seat category can produce very different costs—even within one institution. The snapshot below explains what to compare; it is not a confirmed 2027–28 fee schedule.

College or seat category Fee pattern What to check
Government medical college Usually subsidised; academic fees can range from thousands to a few lakh rupees a year, depending on the institution Official fee order, hostel, deposits, bond and service conditions
Private college, state-regulated seat Fees depend on the state and quota; a regulated category can differ from management seats Current state fee notification and exact allotted seat category
Private management or deemed university seat Typically higher; the full tuition commitment can run into tens of lakhs and may exceed ₹1 crore at high-fee institutions All instalments, annual increases and compulsory additional charges
NRI seat Institution-specific; may involve higher or foreign-currency fees NRI eligibility, billing currency, sponsor documents and total liability

What costs are extra to tuition?

Ask about hostel, mess, university and examination charges, refundable deposits, books, equipment, transport and personal spending. Check whether any amount rises annually. Do not assume internship stipends will offset your course budget; entitlement and payments depend on the institution and applicable rules.

Are counselling deposits always refundable?

No. Registration fees are usually non-refundable, while security deposits are refundable only under the applicable conditions. Non-joining, resignation or ineligibility can lead to forfeiture under the relevant scheme. Check the exact amount, refund process and round-specific conditions before paying.

What is a service bond?

Some colleges or states require graduates to serve for a stated period or pay a specified penalty. Separate rules may apply to discontinuing the course. Read the bond and discontinuation terms before listing a college, especially when comparing a low tuition fee with long-term obligations.

Seats, Ranks and College Choice

How many MBBS seats are available for 2027–28?

Use the session-specific NMC college information and the seat matrices released by MCC and the relevant state authority. Seat numbers can change with permissions, renewals and round-wise vacancies. An old total or proposed seat expansion is not the same as the seats actually available for allotment.

What NEET score is needed for a government seat?

There is no reliable single score for every student. Closing ranks depend on the state, quota, category, college and round. Marks also vary in meaning with the difficulty of the examination and the performance of the candidate pool. Compare previous closing ranks for your exact category and quota rather than treating last year's marks as a guarantee.

Can students from another state apply to private colleges?

Some states allow eligible non-domicile applicants for certain private seat categories; others impose different restrictions or priorities. Check that state's brochure for the precise category before paying its registration fee. Do not assume that access to private seats means access to that state's government quota.

Documents for Counselling and Reporting

Keep clear scans, originals and the number of copies specified by the authority or college. A typical checklist includes:

  • NEET admit card, scorecard and rank details.
  • Class 10 certificate for date of birth and Class 12 marksheet and passing certificate.
  • Valid identity proof and recent photographs.
  • Category, EWS or PwD certificates in the prescribed format, where applicable.
  • Domicile or nativity evidence where required.
  • Allotment letter, registration confirmation and payment receipts.
  • Transfer, migration, character and medical fitness certificates if requested.
  • NRI, sponsor, relationship or overseas-status evidence for the relevant quota.

Certificate formats, validity periods and issuing authorities matter. A document accepted in one scheme may not satisfy another scheme's requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get direct admission by paying a donation?

A donation or an agent's assurance cannot replace NEET eligibility and authorised counselling. Use official allotment procedures and documented college payments. Do not hand over money for an unverified promise of a guaranteed seat.

What should I do immediately after an allotment?

Download the allotment letter, read the reporting instructions and verify the deadline. Arrange the required originals and fees, complete reporting, and keep proof of admission. If you want an upgrade, follow that round's rules rather than assuming your seat will be held automatically.

Can I leave an allotted seat and join another round?

It depends on the round, authority, whether you have joined, and the notified resignation and eligibility rules. Leaving at the wrong stage can forfeit money or prevent later participation. Read the current scheme before resigning or skipping reporting.

Are management and NRI seats exempt from NEET?

No. These seat categories have separate fee and documentation rules, not a general exemption from NEET. You must meet the applicable examination and counselling requirements.

Should I choose India or consider MBBS abroad?

Compare a realistic Indian seat with a specific overseas programme—not a generic country advertisement. Consider complete cost, clinical training, family support and the licensing route. Foreign graduates must meet additional Indian registration requirements; see our Russia MBBS FAQs if that option is on your shortlist.
